How to Pair Your Paver Patio and Swimming Pool in Dublin OH
There are few things in life as much fun as spending lazy summer days by the pool, enjoying the sounds of water, the peaceful solitude, and of course happy kids… but summer isn’t the only time your poolscape should be beautiful. After all, the Ohio seasons ensure that you’ll be looking at your pool from your kitchen window for a good portion of the year: this means your paver patio should be beautiful enough to take center stage at any time of year. To achieve the look (and functionality) you want, here’s how to pair your paver patio and swimming pool in Dublin, OH.

Take Cues From the Pool
If you already have a pool, this is the starting point for the pavers you’ll want to use throughout your pool deck and outdoor living spaces. They don’t have to be the same (each space can have its unique flavor) but they must be complementary.
Rounded and relaxed pools with a beach entry where you walk into the pool along a gentle slope, naturally invite light, sand-colored pavers. You can carry these throughout your patio area as well. It’s a relaxed vibe that you can dress down with beach-themed decor, or dress up with sophisticated lighting and details like contrasting borders and accents.
More formal, rectangular pools or “cocktail” pools (dipping pools) can bring to mind elegant spa resorts. This inspires the use of cool light grey paver colors, usually in an oversized format that contributes to a clean, uncluttered look. Finish the look with monochromatic privacy plantings and resort-like focal points such as a fountain or fire bowl.
Take Cues from the Home
Your outdoor living spaces should complement your home’s design. That doesn’t mean if your home is traditional, you can’t have an ultramodern pool area and patio. In many cases, the contrast is beautiful! Just be sure to use colors and materials that don’t clash.
Start with colors: avoid mixing cool and warm colors for a pleasing visual effect. If you aren’t sure which color family your existing pavers (or the pavers you like) are, put something yellow and something blue next to them. If the pavers look better next to the yellow object, they’re warm. If they look better next to the blue object, they’re cool.
Tying It Together
As we mentioned, you don’t have to use the same materials at the poolside as you do on the patio. They can have their own distinct feel. But, you’ll need to tie them together somehow. One clever way to do that is by using the same border material in both spaces. Brick is very popular in this respect. Brick comes in many colors (not just “brick red”) and looks great next to virtually every other paving material.
Practical Considerations
There are many choices for the pavers that will surround your pool. Some of the same considerations need to be taken into account for both pool decks and patios.
Certain types of pavers are better than others around pools. Safety first, so be sure to choose pavers with a non-slip finish. Even smooth pavers can feature a slip-proof yet swimsuit-friendly texture that won’t snag or rub, but will offer surefootedness when boisterous kids splash copious amounts of water out of the pool.
Choose lighter colors for use around the pool. Dark colors absorb heat, so if you’re not sure, test a paver that’s been in the hot sun: if you can’t hold your hand or bare foot on it for 10 seconds, it’s too hot for the pool deck.
