A sophisticated backyard retreat is a growing trend, for a reason. It’s less maintenance, and of course, more beautiful. One big trend is multi-level living. A multi-level patio creates a dynamic outdoor space that is more tranquil at the same time.

Organize your outdoor living into outdoor rooms. Just like the inside of your home, even open-concept spaces feature distinct zones for relaxing, dining, and even working from home. The boundaries between these areas should be well-defined and traffic should be organized so that nobody has to walk through a quiet lounge area to get to the outdoor kitchen. One way to deliberately guide traffic is to have each room on a different level. When each level is accessible by strategically located steps (and separated by a low wall or living wall) then you can more easily direct the flow of traffic. As a bonus, low walls can accommodate extra guests without adding clutter to a patio.

1. You could place your outdoor kitchen or grill station and dining area on the upper level, closest to the home. This is not only for convenience, but the cooking area is a high-traffic space so you don’t want it on the outer reaches of the patio.

2. From this hub, you could move outward to a fireside lounge area for entertaining. If you have a sloped lot, this would naturally be one level down (and a “level” could be one or several steps, depending on the slope of the land. If your property is flat, you can still achieve a cozy yet dramatic sunken fireside lounge; there’s a reason those 60’s “conversation pits” were such a hit!

3. Furthest from the home, away from the activity, you could tuck a quiet spot where you can truly get away from it all. This could be a meditation spot or a spot to hang a hammock.

4. You can also go up: an elevated hot tub positioned close to the home (near the cooking and dining area) offers a stunning view of the entire space while you’re in the hot tub; and, its close-in location prevents a lengthy trek back to the home after a long soak.

5. Optimize your views, too. Upper levels are where the best views will be so keep that in mind. You could even elevate a seating area, instead of having it lower than the cooking/dining patio, to take advantage of a spectacular view.

6. Throughout, use the same types of pavers for a cohesive look, but vary the laying pattern or laying orientation to further define spaces. One level could be oriented parallel to the house, for example, and the next could be oriented at a 45 degree angle. In a visually dynamic space like a multi-level patio, it’s best to stick with a monochromatic paver theme and minimize embellishments like contrasting borders to keep the space from being too busy.

7. If you have a pool, positioning an infinity pool on a middle level will give you a dramatic view of the levels below, which could include a seating area, and of course the landscape itself.
