Subtle, or Bold?

Every patio needs to have a border of pavers that give it a finished look and also act as structural support to help prevent pavers from coming loose. The first question to ask is whether you want this border to be virtually invisible, subtle, or dramatic.

To achieve the “invisible border” look, use the same pavers as the main field (both in size and color); and keep the color of the jointing sand as close to the paver colors as possible.

To achieve a subtle look, you have a few choices. Your border pavers can be just a few shades different than the main field (for example, choosing a mid-tone brown field paver and a sand-colored border). And, you could use just one border paver. This paver could be positioned directly on the edge of the patio to “frame” the patio. Or, it could be positioned just inside the outer layer of pavers where it acts more as an accent - the outermost layer would repeat the main field paver.

To achieve a bold look, you could choose up to two different border pavers in colors that offer contrast to the main field.

In general you want to stick with no more than three types of pavers, total (one field paver and up to two accents), to avoid a cluttered and overly busy look. This goes for colors, as well as textures.

Here are some great paver choices for borders, accents, and decorative inlays.

Tumbled Pavers

Tumbled pavers look like weathered quarried stone. These give your outdoor living space a distinctly casual look reminiscent of Tuscan villas - perfectly made for relaxed entertaining. They typically come in fairly small square or rectangular shapes and relatively light colors, making them the ideal contrast to darker and larger format pavers. They are excellent borders for pavers with a limestone or flagstone look.

Brick

One of the most versatile and beloved pavers is brick. It is often used as a field paver but is also ideal for artistic inlays, borders, accents, and for curved applications.

Traditional brick is made using clay, which limits color choices; but modern concrete brick-like pavers come with an expanded range of colors including tan, brown, blue, gray, charcoal, and of course a variety of reddish tones. You can also find blended colors and a variety of finishes (brushed, smooth, distressed, or the traditional dimpled finish).

With that many style options, it’s easy to choose one or even two for your patio project. A brick border, echoed as banding and accents on vertical features (retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and more) will tie the look together in a timeless and elegant way!

Brick looks amazing next to virtually any paver. It can “dress up” a rustic flagstone patio, or make an ultra modern patio feel warmer. Brick brings personality to any project and it’s one of the most popular paver styles for accents and borders.

Cobbles

Concrete pavers made in the cobblestone style (small square, rectangular, or rounded pavers) add a historic touch to your patio. Like brick, they can also be used to bring visual interest to vertical surfaces as well. Many cobbles will come in traditional greyish tones, but they are also available in tan and dark charcoal shades if you want to “turn up the volume” on drama.

Cobbles and brick go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly. This is the ideal combination for creating a border using two distinct yet complementary materials.
